About Us

Radio Gwendolen was the brainchild of two local

school teachers,Ray Lovejoy and Bernie Smith.

After a stay in hospital, Ray decided it would be a

good idea to try and provide a record request service

to the patients of the hospital to try to alleviate the

boredom he experienced at first hand during his time

in a hospital bed.

The two friends took their idea to all the the main

hospitals in Leicester and it was the General

Hospital that took the most interest in their

proposal. It was agreed that a 3 month trial would

be undertaken.

During the trial period, the patients showed a great willingness to co-operate and the early broadcasts were recorded at Ray's home and then the tape was relayed to the wards over the hospital amplifiers.
